Floods, Christmas Traditions and Counting our Blessings

It has been a hard couple of weeks here in Whatcom County where we live. Our community has been devastated by flooding. Families and friends have lost their homes overnight and during that time of year where we are to count our blessings, be thankful and celebrate the birth of our Savior.

While it may seen hopeless and I may be discouraged with all the rain and flooding, I am truly blessed and thankful for God’s provision, a community that rallies around each other and the outpouring of generosity to those around us. This community in a time of hardship has shown the true spirit of giving, loving people and living together. Strangers helping strangers.

Mr. Rogers once said, “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.”

While I am thankful for a warm and dry house, the small peaks of sunshine coming through the window I can’t help but be filled with hope for our community. As you are setting up your Christmas Tree, enjoying the anticipation of the Christmas season be a helper to those around you who might need a lending hand.
